Roundup is one of the most well-known products on the market that kills weeds in your
yard. The product uses a chemical called glyphosate, which is particularly toxic to plants that fall into
the broadleaf grouping. This makes it a good option for killing weeds without harming the grass in your
yard or other kinds of plants that you don’t want to kill.
A company called Monsanto developed the product and helped to make it highly
visible and commonly sold for this need. The company indicated that the product was not harmful to humans
and did not expressly state that people using it or keeping it in their homes should handle it with
caution.
Roundup has since been identified as a product that has been linked to cancer. Monsanto settled more than
100,000 Roundup lawsuits before the company became defunct. These cases paid out about $11 billion to
those who had developed health issues related to coming into contact with this weed killer. The product
was not removed from the consumer market at this time, however.
In June of 2022, the Ninth Circuit filed a decision that was backed by the EPA. The product is undergoing
reclassification as a product that could be potentially harmful to human health. Bayer, who had acquired
the product after Monsanto went out of business, was told by the Eleventh Circuit Court in July of 2022
that they did not adequately warn consumers about the dangers of contact with this product.
The primary health condition that has been linked to Roundup exposure is non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. However,
there are other cancers that have been linked with exposure to glyphosate. Internal communications were
recently released by Bayer that indicate that Monsanto staff were aware that the product could cause harm
to humans but intentionally withheld this information from the public.
Bayer continues to stand behind the product and claims it has no link to cancer. However, in 2021 Bayer
announced that it would stop selling Roundup for residential use in 2023, but would still sell it for
commercial use.
This is the list of cancers that are linked with exposure to Roundup products:
